 Don't Be a Wimp! | Daily Inspiration – Lisa's Thoughts

At Archbishop Runcie CE First School we have the privilege of building the strong emotional foundations that children require in order to thrive and grow into well rounded and healthy adults. As a church school, we promote educational excellence, for everyone. Our purpose in education is to enable the children, families, staff, Governors and the wider community who we serve to flourish. The Christian values of Love and Determination are at the core of teaching and culture within the school. We believe this makes us distinctive in the learning experience on offer.

As a school, we are committed to ensuring our children are well equipped with the social and emotional abilities to be confident, resilient, strong, well-rounded individuals who are able to accomplish goals and become responsible citizens.

Ethos Aims

  • Build and promote the Christian values of Love and Determination, encouraging children to show love, forgiveness and respect for others, courageously advocating for a kinder world.
  • Teach rigorous lessons with high expectations within a loving, nurturing environment, enabling all to flourish.
  • Value the uniqueness and individual worth of each member as a child of God.
  • Place collective worship as a shared experience at the centre of the school's daily life.
  • Serve and warmly welcome the community, including those of all faiths and none.

Personal Development

The experiences that we offer to our pupils are planned very carefully to support their wider development. We teach our children to be polite, well mannered and show great respect for one-another, adults and visitors in terms of culture, beliefs and lifestyle.

Staff work relentlessly to ensure that our children feel safe and we have created an environment where bullying and discrimination in any form is not tolerated by adults or children. Pupils are taught how to deal with bullying so that they are equipped for the future should they need it. In the very rare cases bullying happens, adults are very quick to put a stop to the situation because there is always someone to talk to. Any issues are dealt with quickly, firmly but fairly and by supporting everyone concerned.

The adults in school have high expectations of the children and as a result they behave exceptionally well - this is testament to the value that the staff place on relationships, which in themselves are exceptional. Our pupils relish the additional responsibilities that they are given such as becoming playground leaders, to be on the School Council, Green Team, Library Champions or digital leaders - all a very important part of school life.

In February 2017 the Archbishop of Canterbury stated: "There are no problems here, there are simply people. People are made in the image of God. All of us, without exception, are loved and called in Christ. ….The way forward needs to be about love, joy and celebration of our humanity; of our creation in the image of God, of our belonging to Christ – all of us, without exception, without exclusion."

At ARFS, we address Equality and Protected Characteristics through our No Outsiders ethos to create a culture of belonging and acceptance within our school family.

We have an inclusive school vision. This includes affording pupils a sense of their own dignity and a vision of the innate dignity of all humankind. Inclusivity and hospitality are hallmarks of our school and every child is revered and respected as a member of our community where we are all are known and loved by God.

In collective worship, the importance of inclusivity and dignity and respect for all is explored, as well as other themes and values that play a part in challenging all forms of prejudicial behaviour and language.

Opportunities to discuss issues to do with self-esteem, identity and bullying are woven into our curriculum. The Church of England’s teaching on human sexuality and the range of Christian views are taught, as well as a range of perspectives from other faiths and world views.

What is No Outsiders?
No Outsiders is an ethos that promotes an inclusive education, promoting community cohesion to prepare young people and adults for life as global citizens.
